A standard humic acid, Suwannee River humic acid obtained 16 from International Humic Substances Society was used as a reference analyte. 17 Compared four fractions found by peak picking method in two-dimension 18 chromatograms: humic substances (Peak 1, at elution time 14.0-14.7 min); fulvic 19 acids or aliphatic diprotic organic acids (Peak 2, at elution time 14.7-15.2 min); low 20 MW acids (Peak 3, at elution time 15.8-16.2 min); and low MW neutrals and 21 amphiphilics, proteins and their amino acid building blocks (Peak 4, at elution time 22 16.2-17.0 min), a new fraction, lower MW humic substances (at elution time 23 15.2-15.8 min) was found in both HAs in three-dimension HPLC-SEC 24 chromatograms based on investigating the spectra at various elution time, which 25 locates between the second and third peak. Spectral parameters, such as ratio of 26

Background and Aim: Natural organic matter (NOMs), measured on the basis of organic carbon, produces disinfection by-products precursors (DBPs) during the chlorination process. Some DBPs are carcinogenic. NOMs are not completely removed by conventional water treatment. As a result, in addition to forming DBPs, they support bacterial regrowth in the water distribution systems and cause unpleasan...

Optimization of method for detecting and characterizing NOM by HPLC-size exclusion chromatography with UV and on-line DOC detection.

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-size exclusion chromatography (SEC) with ultraviolet absorbance (UVA) and on-line dissolved organic carbon (DOC) detectors has been adapted and optimized under various conditions. An enhanced HPSEC-UVA system employing a modified commercially available DOC detector provides a better understanding of the qualitative and quantitative natural organic m...

Assessment of Trihalomethane Formation in Chlorinated Raw Waters with Differential UV Spectroscopy Approach

In this study, the changes in UV absorbance of water samples were characterized using defined differential UV spectroscopy (DUV), a novel spectroscopic technique. Chlorination experiments were conducted with water samples from Terkos Lake (TL) and Büyükçekmece Lake (BL) (Istanbul, Turkey). The maximum loss of UV absorbance for chlorinated TL and BL raw water samples was observed at a wavelength...

Detection of s-triazine pesticides in natural waters by modified large-volume direct injection HPLC.

There is a need for simple and inexpensive methods to quantify potentially harmful persistent pesticides often found in our water-ways and water distribution systems. This paper presents a simple, relatively inexpensive method for the detection of a group of commonly used pesticides (atrazine, simazine and hexazinone) in natural waters using large-volume direct injection high performance liquid...

Determination of Organic Acids in Olive Fruit by HPLC

Ergönül P.G., Nergiz C. (2010): Determination of organic acids in olive fruit by HPLC. Czech J. Food Sci., 28: 202–205. Organic acids (oxalic, citric, malic, and succinic) contents of Domat, Memecik and Uslu varieties of olives grown in Turkey were investigated using HPLC method. Organic acids were extracted from olives with water-methanol mixture solution 75:25 (v/v) and were analysed through ...
